On August 13, Starbucks (SBUX) replaced CEO Laxman Narasimhan with Chipotle’s (CMG) CEO Brian Niccol. Starbucks’ stock, which has lagged since April 2023 and more sharply post-November 2023 on weak quarterly results, gapped up ~25% on 10.6x average daily volume on the news.

Retailers Poised to Shift to the Top Gear

The pandemic drastically transformed some sectors directly and the supply chain issues caused by it led to a few sectors being impacted indirectly, but significantly. The $297B U.S. automotive aftermarket parts retail industry has been a benefactor of these indirect effects. It enjoys multiple tailwinds from changing consumer preferences in the U.S while also being aided by the macroeconomic conditions in the country. As customer confidence deteriorates, car payments keep surging and U.S. consumers continue with pickup trucks as vehicles of choice, certain retailers have started showing leadership.

Reiterating our BUY call on Compass Group (CPG.GB)

Attached is a company update on Compass Group (CPG.GB) from Director, Research Analyst Irusha Peiris, William O’Neil India Analyst Kunal Gupta and Tapan Asgaonkar.

 

  • We are reiterating our buy call on Compass Group as it is trading in the buy range after breaking out of a stage-two consolidation base and reported a strong Q3 FY22 trading update.
  • Q3 trading update was strong: Organic revenue grew 43.4%, an acceleration from 37.9% in H1 FY22. The underlying operating margin was up from 5.8% in H1 to 6.2% for Q3. It also raised its FY22 guidance on the back of significant acceleration in growth and continuing recovery of its base business.
  • Fundamental ratings: Composite Rating of 99, SMR Rating of C, and EPS Rank of 89.
  • Technical ratings: RS line is trending up, with an RS Rating of 93 and A/D Rating of C+.
