Global Consumer Staples Sector
U.S. Consumer Staples Sector
Short-term momentum of the long-term lagging U.S. Staples sector (YTD: +6.8% versus +16.2% for the S&P 500) has improved in the last four weeks (+3.3% versus +1.1% for the S&P 500). Improving momentum has been driven by: 1. a better-than-expected Q3 earnings season, 2. the sector’s defensive profile as risk appetite fades, and 3. a re-rating following long-term underperformance. We recently highlighted that “the relationship between the best and worst sectors, Tech and Consumer Staple, is starting to near a historic extreme.” The sector (WS005) retook its 50-DMA last month but remains below its 200- DMA and is finding resistance at its downward trend line. Overall we remain cautious on Staples until we see the sector breaking through key resistances.
